Process Signatures

Every process has a signature

1 shows signatures of "good" parts.

2 represent obvious failures that any basic defect
detection system can find .

3 Almost compliant: in this case, true failures that
only deviate slightly from the ‘norm’.  Easy to spot
with a signature, but impossible to catch with classical
systems.

Process signature technology, also known as signature analysis, is a powerful tool for understanding manufacturing process behavior. With this understanding comes the ability to control the process, not just to improve quality but also to manage yield and costs.

Process signatures measure the heartbeat of a process. As an ECG measures critical variables to determine the function of a healthy heart, every process has a repeatable signature when it is compliant and under control.

Most manufacturing processes can be understood through critical process variables. Collected and digitized throughout the manufacturing cycle, these parameters yield a process signature for every operation. The signature uniquely defines the behavior of the materials and tooling for that operation and process signature technology is the comparison of the detailed response against pre-determined responses to determine compliance with specifications.

As it is based on a detailed measurement of multiple variables, it provides the most accurate and insightful determination of part quality and process control. It enables manufacturers to find defects – or process issues that can lead to defects – that other technologies would miss and the ability to identify the root cause of issues within the production line.

Sciemetric pioneered the development of process signature verification (PSV) in manufacturing and is the only company that offers the technology for industrial and process applications that span across the plant.
